50+ Things to Do When Bored at Home (Fun & Productive)

Boredom is a tricky thing. It sneaks up on you when you least expect it, and can be difficult to shake off. Especially if you’ve been stuck in the same place doing the same things every day of your life.

To help you with your list of things to do, here’s a list of 110+ things to do when bored at home, I’ve tried to include ideas suitable for many different ages and situations.

Why is it important to be productive?

It’s essential to be productive because it helps you to achieve your goals and live a happier, more fulfilling life. When you’re productive, you can set aside time for the things that are most important to you and accomplish what needs to get done.

You’ll be able to enjoy life more because you don’t waste time doing things that don’t matter.

What to Do When Bored

Get creative

Make an origami crane, paint a picture, or write a poem. The possibilities are endless regarding being creative, so don’t hold back. You might surprise yourself with what you come up with and make something even better than expected.

Read a book

Reading is one of the best things you can do for yourself, so if you’re feeling bored at home, pick up a book from your shelf (or download one on your Kindle) and read away. Reading helps improve your vocabulary, helps relieve stress, and gives you new ideas to think about as well as entertain you for hours on end.

Take a walk outside

It doesn’t matter if it’s raining or snowing outside, getting outside will always do wonders for me when I feel bored at home! Going outside allows me to clear my mind and get some fresh air into my lungs, plus, there’s always something happening outdoors.

Play a board game

If you want to play with friends, try Settlers of Catan, Pandemic, or Ticket to Ride. If you want something solo, go for Lost Cities or Carcassonne.

Listen to music

Make a playlist of your favorite songs and listen to them in order from start to finish, or shuffle them and listen in random order.

Take pictures

Find a good spot in your house (or yard) for some photos, then use your camera phone or a real camera to capture the moment!

Write a story (or poem)

If you’re feeling inspired, write down your thoughts on paper (or on your computer). There’s no right way to do this, just let yourself be creative.

Take a nap

Naps are great for the body and mind, so why not take one? Just ensure you wake up at a decent hour so you don’t miss out on anything important.

Clean something

Cleaning is suitable for both the body and mind, so why not clean something in your house that needs cleaning? Maybe dusting would be a good place to start.

Cook something new

If you’re feeling adventurous, try making something new in the kitchen! It could be anything from cookies to spaghetti sauce, remember to ask an adult before starting this activity.

Get creative with art supplies like crayons, markers, or colored pencils.

Art is fun because there are no rules or limitations when creating something beautiful with color and style. You can create whatever strikes your fancy whether it’s an animal or flower, as long as it makes you happy.

Create a spa experience

You can easily create your own spa experience by making a relaxing bath with candles and bubbles. Light some candles in the bathroom and turn on some soft music while taking a soak in the tub.

You can also try adding different oils to your bathwater to enhance the experience even more.

Go for a walk

Walking is one of the best ways to stay healthy and get rid of stress. You don’t need to go far either, just walking around your neighborhood can be enough exercise for your body and mind. It’s also an excellent way to explore new places that are nearby or have never been explored before.

Play a game

Playing games is another great way to relieve stress from your day-to-day life, as well as keep boredom at bay when there’s nothing else going on around you (or maybe you don’t feel like doing anything else).

There’s no need for video games either, board games like Monopoly or Chess can be just as entertaining.

Start a book club

If you’ve ever dreamt about having your own book club, this is the perfect time to make that dream come true. Invite some friends over and spend an evening discussing one of your favorite novels or a classic work of literature.

You can even have a theme for each month’s meeting, such as “murder mysteries” or “a novel with a strong female protagonist.”

Make a mood board

Mood boards are great ways to brainstorm ideas for decorating your home or office, but they can also be used as tools for stress relief and relaxation when you’re bored at home. Create a mood board that reflects your favorite color scheme and then just let your imagination run wild.

You could use magazine clippings, paint samples, and fabric swatches to create something truly unique that expresses who you are as an individual.

Have a movie marathon

Nothing beats curling up on the couch with your favorite snacks and watching hours upon hours of movies in one sitting (at least not in my humble opinion). This is especially fun if you have friends over who enjoy doing the same thing.

Bake something

Baking is a great way to occupy yourself while also producing something delicious at the end of it. You can find tons of recipes online, from simple cookies and muffins to more complicated cakes and pastries.

Make your own pizza from scratch

You can use a recipe book or online video to learn how to make your own pizza dough, or buy pre-made pizza dough from the grocery store and create your own toppings.

Practice yoga

Yoga is a great way to relax and stretch out after a long day of work and school. Find a beginner’s yoga DVD online and practice at home in front of the TV on rainy days or during a break between classes.

Do a puzzle

Puzzles are great ways to keep yourself occupied when you don’t have anything else in mind to do. Pick up some jigsaw puzzles at the local dollar store, pick one up at a thrift store or library sale, or search online for free printable puzzles that will keep you busy for hours.
